SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL DEGREE SHOW! I popped down to Spike Island Monday to see the UWE Fine Art Degree Show. The show is well curated with good work, but I couldn't help think, I've been on the other side of this, I know what art students are like. I found myself wondering who was in the studio a lot and who blagged their way through. I know this is the wrong thing to do, my visit should be all about the work but it can't be helped. The really test for these students will come next and it won't be about who does or doesn't put in the studio time, it will be about who has the drive, passion and talent to make it as an artist.
Back to the art!
These piece really caught my eye. Sadly I do not know the name of the artist or the title of this work even after hunting on the website, partypieces2011.com/work/ (could this be someone who did not put much effort into their degree?). I wish I thought of this! It is strong, instant and humorous. The image is so strong as a viewer the work has stayed with me, wriggling its way into my conscious and unconscious! You may say that the work is slightly gimmicky and I would agree on some level. The work does not need slippers and a pipe. It narrows the work to comment only on old people when this could be about the disabled community as a whole old and young!
I also love how the old manual wheelchairs have been used as trash to be leaped over by the powerful electric chair!
